IBM X-31, I will not let you go

My trusty IBM X-31 has been with me for over four years. I bought it then for $1500 and it has lasted since. Since then, I have replaced the AC adapter (the wire wore off and split open). The battery lasts no more than 15 minutes and should be replaced if I ever want to take this away from the wall plug.

While the new MacBooks look incredibly appealing, I'm still hanging on, hoping that she serves me well for at least one more year. Other than some overheating, especially when watching videos, it still functions.

1200 calories of chicken cutlets and gravy at L&L

Why do I keep doing this to myself. What is worse is that I'm still skinny and not getting fat.

Obama delivers his first "fireside" chat video

Obama uses YouTube, a la FDR's fireside chats. Perhaps using this more modern medium (instead of radio) will inspire the younger population to actively participate in government.

Finally, a job description that doesn't require the customary 10 years of experience

I like the forward thinking of this job description. It doesn't require 10 years of experience and puts more emphasis on innate ability. See highlighted text below.

KEVIN JOHNSON '08

Chief of Staff to the Mayor of Sacramento

On November 4th the people elected Kevin Johnson to lead Sacramento with a clear mandate for change.  After playing in the NBA for twelve years, Kevin Johnson founded a non-profit organization focused on community revitalization. As CEO he attracted and planned businesses creating nearly 300 jobs, catalyzed economic development in the region, created seven successful schools that significantly raised student achievement and he is now focused on bringing about change in Sacramento. As Mayor he has pledged to make Sacramento a city that works for everyone.  With a small staff, the Mayor's goal is to change the way politics works in Sacramento – to ensure that decisions are made based on the interests of its citizens and children, and not based on factions or party politics. We are seeking to create a dynamic team that will work relentlessly to create a vibrant Sacramento, increase safety, improve schools and strengthen the city's economy.

[deleted roles and responsibilities for presentation purposes - see attached file for full details]

  • Public-speaking abilities, including the ability to inspire others
  • A willingness to work non-standard hours and occasional weekends
  • Prior experience with the city or in a similar role is not required.
  • MBA, JD, or Masters in Public Policy preferred

Too much work and no maid

This is what happens when you put in a lot of hours during the week and don't have a maid.
